Saducismus Triumphatus Mr. Glanvill’s Cabinet of Curiosities – Anne Jackson UK
This tapestry from Anne’s continuing project ‘The Witchcraft Series,’ illustrates the trail of Elizabeth Styles of Bayford, Somerset, convicted of witchcraft in 1664, recorded in a book written by the clergyman Joseph Glanvill, entitled ‘Saducismus Triumphatus’.
Styles was said to have poisoned a child with an apple, and to have met the Devil in the woods, where groups of witches would bring wax poppets to be baptised and stuck with thorns. She was found guilty but died in jail before she could be hanged.
Anne imagines Mr. Glanvill, as a scholar and a gentleman, making a “cabinet of Curiosities” associated with this trial.
