Anna Atkins – The Waffle Weaver

Anna Atkins, known as The Waffle Weaver, is a handweaver based at Farfield Mill who specialises in waffle weaving. She is known for her colourful, highly textured textiles, using this distinctive technique to create fabric with its characteristic raised, honeycomb-like surface.

Anna enjoys exploring the possibilities of colour, yarn and pattern, creating practical and individual handwoven pieces. One of the fascinating things about her work is that the full waffle texture only emerges once the cloth comes off the loom and is washed, when the woven structure contracts and develops its wonderful three-dimensional character.

Through her work, Anna brings a fresh and colourful approach to a traditional weaving technique, celebrating both the skill of handweaving and the unique qualities of cloth made by hand.
