Since then she has spent time as an Art teacher working in high schools, Garth Prison and Runshaw, Skelmersdale and Bootle Tertiary Colleges. Ruth ran the successful Art studio, ‘Wickerfish’ at Cedar Farm Galleries, Mawdesley, Lancashire for 12 years where she taught adults to paint and draw as well as displaying her own paintings to sell.

She shares a studio with her partner Stuart Gray at Farfield Mill in Sedbergh, Cumbria where they work and sell their paintings.

Winter Patterns Tapestry Weaving Workshop with Anna Wetherell

£ 60 plus £5 to be paid to the tutor.

With Winter settling in, come and explore the patterns and textures in trees, sky and water and create a small woven tapestry inspired by the landscape around the Mill. We will take a short stroll down to the bridge (weather permitting), looking at colour, texture and pattern as well as the views. Anna will then guide you through the step-by-step process of creating your own small tapestry, or, if you have woven before, we can explore projects you are already working on. Suitable for beginners and improvers. If you have tried tapestry weaving before, it is a chance to develop your skills further with Anna’s support.Bring your own equipment if you have it, but there will also be looms warped up ready to go and a range of weft yarn for you to use. Additional equipment will be available for sale, should you wish to continue weaving after the workshop day (up to around £70).

ANNA WETHERELL

I have been weaving tapestry since 2013 and have exhibited my work as part of several group exhibitions. I have studied with a number of leading UK tapestry weavers, am an active member of the British Tapestry Group and run Nearly Wild Weaving with my colleague, Irene. My inspiration for weaving comes from the natural world around us, the landscape, and its history. I try to convey a sense of place, the touchstone of a point in time. As a geologist and ecologist, I see the processes and patterns that have shaped what I see around me, and this is reflected in the tapestries I weave. I am passionate about connecting people and nature, and I have found that tapestry weaving and other approaches to artistic creativity can make a massive difference to people’s health and wellbeing.

Winter Farm House in the style of Peter Brooks,  Acrylic Painting Workshop – Stuart Gray

She has over 30 years’ experience in the textile field working in Higher Education running a Constructed Textile Resource at University of Cumbria, formally Cumbria Institute of the Arts until 2010, when she decided to concentrating fulltime making and exhibiting her own work.

Jan is a member of the Wool Clip, a co-operative of local craftspeople based at Caldbeck in North Cumbria and organisers of Woolfest in Cockermouth.

Exploring Water through Tapestry Weaving – Anna Wetherell
Sunday 3rd March 10 – 4pm

Come and explore the patterns and textures in water and create a small woven tapestry inspired by the river and landscapes around the Mill. We will take a short stroll down to the bridge (weather permitting), looking at colour, texture, and pattern. We will then return to the workroom via the exhibitions and explore how we can weave water and its environment in simple ways, or, if you have woven before, we can look at specific techniques such as pick and pick, blending and hatching. Suitable for beginners and improvers. Bring your own equipment if you have it, but there will also be looms warped up ready to go and a range of weft yarn for you to use. Additional equipment will be available for sale, should you wish to continue weaving after the workshop day (up to around £70).

Become a Weaver – Jan Beadle

If you know the basics, maybe set up your own loom and woven some patterns, or have never done any weaving before and would love to have ago.
The 2-day course will take you through the whole process of winding a warp and dressing a loom to weaving your cloth, Jan will provide you with all the tips, tricks and techniques to ease your path into weaving.

Apron Workshop with Jeanette Hanna 16 March £65 plus £10 for fabric (or bring your own)
If you are new to sewing or have sewn before and would like to learn how to make your Apron from start to finish, then this is for you. You will learn to lay a pattern, cut it out, sew on straps and sew on a pocket, as well as do top stitching, giving a very professional finish to your Apron.
What the workshop will cover:
Setting up your sewing machine and workspace.
Guidance to cutting out the pattern. Laying up cloth to achieve best usage of your cloth.
Pinning and cutting the cloth, transferring notches and tips to make cutting out a breeze.
Constructing your Apron – how to sew your garment together, importance of pressing as you go and using the overlocker to neaten the seams. I have overlockers for you to use and a steam iron to create a beautiful, finished Apron.
I will guide you through each step.
Thread (most colours available)

You will need to bring:
Your sewing machine: make sure you bring the foot pedal, pins and small scissors for cutting threads etc. (pins and scissors will be available if you forget to pack them.)
Larger Scissors for cutting out the cloth (I can provide if needed)
Thread, only if colour is special. (I have a lot of thread colours to use)
You will need a metre of cloth for your apron. A heavy cotton would be good to use. Best to use a woven cloth not a stretch.
I can provide Calico or Denim cloth or a Khaki green heavy cotton at £10 per mtr. If you do not have any cloth to bring. Just let me know what you would like.

Jeanette Hanna – Seamstress and Pattern cutter
Jeanette has wide experience in textile design. She was a pattern cutter at Karen Millen before working independently.
Jeanette now uses her skills to create bespoke items for the home ranging from tweed cushions to eco textiles for the kitchen.

Mad March Hares Ceramic Workshop with Suzie Wright 23 & 24 March 10-3pm
Start spring in style with sculptor Suzie Wright to create your own unique hare from stoneware clay. You can vary the hare sculpture in ways to make it your own. The workshop will be a small group with guidance and demonstrations at each stage, this makes the workshop is suitable for all. No two hares will be exactly the same although the design is based on the images pictured here.

Your stoneware clay sculpture will taken to be glazed and high fired. Your work will be returned to the Mill for collection around three weeks later. It will be safe to put outside in the garden if you wish.
All the tools and materials necessary will be provided.
Please note that there is £18 materials charge payable to the tutor on the day. This covers all materials and the cost of glazing and firing.

Suzie Wright

Suzie lives in the Dales. She works from her studio at home as well as her studio here at Farfield Mill.
“I have been working with clay since I was a young child. Over the years I have worked with many different clays, glazes, and styles. It is in my nature to experiment, and I love the technical side of kilns and firing. Clay brings great joy to my life and think it can do the same for most people. Currently, I am intrigued with the animals of the Dales. I am lucky enough to be able to see hares almost every day. They are secretive and majestic. I try to capture that in my work.”

Hook a Sheep, Hare, or Hen – Jane Cook

Recycle your old clothes using the traditional technique of Rag Rugging. Hooking is a skill that allows you to up cycle old clothes, fabric scraps and yarns into a beautiful tactile piece of hand-crafted work. Once you have mastered the technique of hooking, we will look at fabrics and colour to produce a small wall hanging or trivet.  Approximately 27cm x 20. Hooking can be time consuming, but you will leave with the skills necessary to fully complete your piece of work. This course is suitable for beginners however some knowledge of sewing and using textiles would be beneficial.  Finishing off the project does require some hand sewing. Hessian, templates, hooks, and frames will be provided on the day but are not for sale.

Please bring your own hook or frame if you have one.
Please bring a small selection of fabrics, t-shirt, wool cloth/jumpers, and yarns.  I will bring some, it’s nice to have a choice of colours and texture.
Darning needle and strong thread.  (I have strong thread also)
Scissors suitable for cutting fabrics or cutting wheel and mat.
An apron to protect your clothing from fibres.

I have been hooking, prodding, and dyeing for 24 years.  I love the primitive style of art work and hooking certainly lends itself to this. My inspiration comes from the countryside and the farming community that surrounds me. I use all recycled fabrics, jumble sales and charity shops are regularly visited, my favourite fabric is wool but most fabrics with some ‘give’ in them can be used and create an exciting finish. I have demonstrated, taught classes, and exhibited my work in exhibitions alongside other ruggers over the years.

Jan is a member of the Wool Clip, a co-operative of local craftspeople based at Caldbeck in North Cumbria and organisers of Woolfest in Cockermouth.

A Sense of Place in Woven Tapestry – Anna Wetherell
Sunday 28th April 10 – 4pm

Farfield Mill and its surroundings are a unique environment, which we will explore by taking a short stroll down to the bridge (weather permitting), looking at colour, pattern, and landscape. We will then return to the workroom via the exhibitions and explore how we can capture a sense of place in woven tapestry in simple ways, or, if you have woven before, we can look at specific techniques such as shape, line, blending and hatching. Suitable for beginners and improvers. Bring your own equipment if you have it, but there will also be looms warped up ready to go and a range of weft yarn for you to use. Additional equipment will be available for sale, should you wish to continue weaving after the workshop day (up to around £70).

Stone in Tapestry Weaving – Anna Wetherell

Stone surrounds us at Farfield Mill, in the walls and forming the bed of the river but also in the wider landscape. We will create a small woven tapestry inspired by the surroundings of the Mill, after taking a short stroll down to the bridge (weather permitting), looking at the shapes, textures, and patterns around us. Summer Colour in Woven Tapestry – Anna Wetherell
