Anna Wetherell – Tapestry

Anna Wetherell – Tapestry Weaver

Anna Wetherell has been weaving tapestries since 2013, drawing inspiration from the natural world, archaeology, and a strong sense of place. Her work is often shaped by the materials she has to hand, combining experimentation with traditional techniques. Alongside creating her own work, she teaches tapestry weaving in Carnforth and runs workshops at Farfield Mill, where she is also one of the Weaving Friends and can often be found on Level 4. She exhibits regularly with groups such as the British Tapestry Group and is part of collaborative projects including Waterline and Murmuration. Based in Sedbergh, the surrounding landscape continues to influence her practice.

Her handwoven tapestries are created using weft over a cotton warp, sometimes based on her own photographs and sketches, and sometimes evolving directly on the loom. Using centuries-old techniques with a contemporary approach, her work follows a long tradition seen in historic tapestries from stately homes and museums. Unlike embroidery, the cloth itself is created as the design is woven—a slow, meticulous process that Anna finds deeply absorbing.
