Esther van der Voorn – Midsummer Ovation
To me, the season of summer evokes feelings of life’s fullness, and flowers in full bloom convey the intensity and vibrancy of this season.
I aimed to use contrast, intensity of colour and a sense of movement towards the viewer to portray these qualities.
To create the design, I painted water colour on paper to produce the type of shapes that I was aiming for and to give suggestion of the colours to be used. I wanted floral shapes bursting outwards, but wanted, as would occur in nature, to avoid geometrical or strict regularity. I chose vibrant colours, and some contrasting, to emphasise that vibrancy. After cutting the painted shapes, I rearranged them until I was satisfied with the composition, traced the design to produce a cartoon, and reduced it to an appropriate size.
