Elizabeth Skuce – Swaledale Barns
Largely self-taught, I wove without outside input for several years, my technique consisting of straight passes with a needle, and top stitching! Then I joined Jane Riley at the Weaving Rooms in Darlington and was introduced to tapestry weaving as an art form.
This is my first weave showing shoots of versatility resulting from Jane’s tuition, whilst still following my wish to portray Northern landscapes. The old limestone barns of Swaledale remind us that the hardy Swaledale sheep have been central to economic life here for centuries. Their wool, once used for fabric weaving and knitting, is now used in carpets and insulation.
