Button Up – Aneeta Seshan

Vintage button cards seen as an evocative visual source to illustrate the haberdashers choice for fastening its manufacture of woollenunderwear, for example long -johns and vests.

My choice of representing this particular image was to explore the many related applications in the utilisation of fastenings ( buttons ) tosecure garments .
There may be specific physical requirements in the making of woollen clothes..
The Briton card seems to symbolise ‘utility’ and through research I have concluded they may well have been used in the manufacture ofundergarments . For example the armed forces being kitted out as comfortably as possible with warm and insulated type underwear.
These buttons would withstand being put through a mangle . I would assume it’s practicality and effective fastening .

I hope I have created a work which celebrates its humble usage.
Nostalgia and vintage can very well be explored effectively using embroidery as a characteristic link to textile history.

My technique and processes employ free motion embroidery . The thread used is Rayon 40 , -within a hoop which allows detailing and freelydrawn images with a needle. It’s an interpretation and imagery representation with thread and stitch.
