Julia Wilkins – Hedgerow Dyeing
Hedgerow dyeing encompasses the making use of whatever plant material was available growing nearby, mainly for dyeing items for domestic use. The list of natural subjects can be long – for example: berries, acorns, leaves, bark and many more. They can be collected throughout the year.
I have taken the heather growing on the North Yorkshire Moors for my example. The purple tips were used fresh or dried and stored. They produced a beautiful yellow or olive colour.
