New Landscapes – Peter Bolton

I lived and studied in the old industrial West Riding until moving to Ingleton and my work is a mixture of that area, It’s raw structure and bleakness, and the softer wetness of the Dales.

I have often struggled to find the form and medium with which to express these feelings and have become used to working with a mixture of figurative and imaginative, semi abstract, landscapes at the same time. Somehow resolving the problems of one more realistic style helps me with the looser, freer, and totally imaginative more abstract pieces.

Although I used oils and watercolours for many years, gouache is now my preferred medium. Its chalky dryness and heaviness seem best to realise my feelings about our landscape, its structure, variety and mood.

I studied Fine Art at Leeds and Swansea Universities.
