‘Jangseung” is a Korean totem pole which was placed at the entrance of each village. They are engraved with funny or grotesque faces. The totem pole traditionally acted as a guardian or marker of the border between villages. However, they are difficult to find now in the industrialized urban environment, replaced with soaring high rise apartment buildings.
