“The Bird” by Margaret McCrory Northern Ireland
When I received this beautiful quilt, I immediately thought ‘folk art’. My bird and flowers are loosely based on old drawings of Celtic birds and flowers. The bird is no particular breed but I have used shapes found in ancient Irish images and brought them, up to date using bright colours. The flower is called ‘bells of Ireland’ and is native to Turkey and Syria. It is a tall plant with multiple whorls of green bells and is used frequently in formal arrangements. It was given its Irish ’nickname’ because of its bright green colour.
