Soon Yul Kang – Knot of Yin Yang
These days Soon Yul practices tapestry weaving using traditional handmade mulberry paper as a material. The process is to handwrite a Korean word 사랑 [sarang]’ and ‘love’ with pen on the paper, then cut the paper for weaving.
For this tapestry, titled “Knot of Yin and Yang”, she was inspired by the Eastern philosophy of Yin and Yang which explains the balance and harmony in nature and in the universe. According to the theory of Yin-Yang, all things are said to have two opposing but complementary and cooperative aspects.
In Korea, colour of red and blue also symbolize the knot of marriage.
