Maria Eugenia CORBELLA
Spain
This work was inspired by Bartolina Sisa, a courageous Latin American indigenous woman. She was married to the warlord Tupac Katari with whom she fought alongside leading the rebellion of the indigenous people against the Spanish crown. The international day of Indigenous Women is celebrated on September 5th, commemorating the day that Bartolina Sisa was executed in 1782. Her figure represents all the brave indigenous women who played and continue to play an important role in the survival of their culture, language, and strength of their tribes.
