No Birds Sing – Gill Crompton
The history of Farfield Mill provides insights into the various manufacturing processes involved in the preparation and weaving of woollen cloth. There is still some evidence of the original water source, its potential use and its possible disposal during and after that process. If it was discharged into the adjoining river, the pollution would have been considerable, with significant consequences for its existing wildlife.
In my piece ‘No Birds Sing’ I have used rusted and painted woollen fabric as a base. Hand and machine stitch have been used to tell the imagined story of the river and its inhabitants.
