Landscape to Loom – Diane Beaumont

This artwork was inspired by the processes involved in wool production and manufacturing. The cube represents a wool bale, with the sidesdepicting the Cumbrian landscape, sheep farming, spinning and weaving. All processes are intertwined, portrayed by yarn linking each side.

This 3D artwork was inspired by the processes involved in wool production and manufacturing. This begins with sheep farming in a typicalCumbrian landscape. The cube represents a bale of wool, containing the fleeces, which are sent for spinning into yarns. Ultimately theseyarns are processed into woven cloth or knitted garments. Each part of this process is dependent on one another, depicted here by yarnlinking each side.
The piece was created as six individual parts, utilising free motion machine embroidery to create outlines. Detail has been added with paintand dyes, then hand stitching, and couching yarns has augmented the design. The miniature weaving loom and knitted wool portrays the endprocess of production.
