Kennita Tully (USA) – Discovering the Big Blue
My home is nestled in the rolling prairie and shaded woodland of the Kansas Flint Hills in the United States. Springs flow from the cracks to form creeks and ponds that wind their way through the landscape to meet up with the Big Blue River. My experience with the river has always been through the creeks and trees surrounding it. The rivers in Kansas are often privately owned with few public access points.
Hidden away down a rocky gravel road, I found an access point known to the fishing crowd. Not built for river bank access, this dusty trail gives glimpses of the water through old trees and brush. Without a boat there would be no passage through the tree guards. I tried to represent this feeling of mystique and distance through my design as the viewer catches a glimpse of the water through the trees.
