Dianne Paine – Easy Rider
Using only a frame loom and a basic weft faced plain weave, slowly but surely, row by row, a textile image can be created. This image can be complex or simple, large or small, with a multitude of possible colour combinations. Challenges have to be overcome along the way, but watching my image emerge as I weave the textile is for me the joy of tapestry weaving.
I mostly, although not exclusively, get inspiration for my tapestries from photos that I take. Some simplification and modification of the original photo is needed to make it suitable for use as a textile design.
This tapestry is based on a photo I took in Barcelona in 2022. Motor cycles are a very popular and practical mode of transport there and I enjoyed sitting in the shade watching the riders joyfully and enthusiastically buzzing up and down the streets, their clothing ranging from casual, to business suits, to party outfits. All of this taking place in bright sunshine, in energy sapping temperatures above 30 degrees.
Easy Rider was woven on a tapestry loom using 12/6 cotton warp and a wool weft.
