Circularity – Emma Jackson

This piece is inspired by a quote from Woolmark. “Wool is by nature a circular fibre. The inherently circular nature of wool includes: woolbeing a renewable raw material grown by sheep, high levels of reuse and recycling of wool products and biodegradability when the fibre’snutrients are returned to the soil for use again. This is more than just recycling; it is true circularity. Growing wool has the potential tosequester large amounts of carbon and enhance biodiversity.”

The piece is made with wet felted raw unwashed silver grey Gotland Locks, hand wet felted with black grey Corriedale wool sliver. The locksare sourced from shepherdess Pauline Caroline Jones (Little Flock of Curls) pedigree Whitehall breeding stock Gotland Ewe ‘Freyja’. Freyjais one of Paulines’ original starter flock of five yearlings, begun in 2017 in Dorchester, England. The flock now numbers twenty five over fivegenerations. Gotland Sheep originate on the Swedish island of Gotland with Karakul and Romanov sheep and were first introduced to the UKin the 1970. There are now approximately 40 pure breed Gotland flocks throughout the UK.
