Christina Whitehall – Ceramics

These ceramics are created in response to the landscape from which the clay and other raw materials used to make and glaze them are extracted.
In that landscape the horizon, sky, land and sea appear, meet, and overlap in unique and ever-changing strata of colour and form. These are echoed in the bands of glaze and layers of hue and tone, which mark out the sections and curves around the fired clay surface.
These layers of colour and texture comprise a visual narrative; the lines mapping out a reinterpreted landscape on the piece.
A neutral, or almost monochrome, palette of matte glaze is applied in a way that allows the unglazed clay body to break through as a line, or section, to compliment the smooth look and feel of the glaze.
