“A Whisper of Winter” by Julia Gibson Qatar

“A Whisper of Winter” by Julia Gibson Qatar

When I received the photo of the preceding quilt, I was pleasantly surprised at how simple it was, as part of me had been dreading something complicated that I wouldn’t feel comfortable working on. I was also a little stumped as to what to do to carry it on. The yellow of the sun really stood out to me and I loved the falling leaves, but I knew I wasn’t supposed to just copy it. It struck me that the next logical progression would be from autumn to winter and then I had the idea of the bare tree silhouetted against the setting sun in a wintry landscape. Obviously, living in Qatar our winters have none of these elements, but I used to live in the country in the UK and loved those snowy, frosty, cold days when the sun was bright and reflected back from the snow and ice on the ground. I decided that the field would be ploughed, ready for the advent of spring, and used a dark fairy frost fabric that I hoped would convey the impression of ice on turned earth. I hoped the fabric for the sky would convey one full of the promise of snow and then another fairy frost for the icy ground.
