‘Breath’ is a solo exhibition of work by Dumfries and Galloway based, mixed media, abstract artist Maggie Ayres. Her practice focuses on texture, light and mark making regardless of the materials she uses. Maggie’s first solo show at Farfield was in 2009.

In 2019 Maggie started to consider the nature of breath and how air is shared among all living things. Following a self-directed residency at Caerlaverock Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site on the Solway coast in November of that year, close to her earliest childhood home, more visual connections arose for her. Sketchbooks, photographs and field recordings fed and broadened the scope of her ideas dominated by the big sky, beguiling barnacle geese overwintering on the Merse and a surging sense of place.

In 2020 in the time of Covid-19 and its impact as a global pandemic, the notion of ‘breath’ took on even more unexpected significance.
