THE STAIRWELL

Traces

11 September to 14 November

Cas Holmes

A research trip to India allowed Cas to explore new avenues for her work. She became immersed in exotic images, colours and landscapes totally alien to her upbringing and experience, yet in her childhood she remembered similar colours in the surroundings of her grandmother’s home. The resulting work explores the cultural links between Indian art and decoration and those of her own Romany heritage and makes a link between that experience and her own interest through the use of colour, pattern and image. Found materials gathered in India are combined with donated waste silks, fabric and paper from the UK, and re-assembled into large wall hangings.

Shadowlands

20 November to 2 January

Rosie Wates

Rosie reaches for the shadows of time past, embedding haunting photographic images in paint and gold leaf and mirror. Using her own and her family’s histories as emblems of the fleeting stories of so many lives that pass and leave no trace, she constructs in the present objects that stubbornly strive to carry their whispers into the future.
